CitySens 3D Printing Project: Sustainable Planters and Green Innovation

Posted By: F. Xavier Rius Ruiz

At CitySens, we firmly believe in innovation and sustainability. Recently, we completed a collaboration project with Eurecat for the development of sustainable plant pots using 3D printing. This project has resulted in significant advancements in the mechanical properties of 3D-printed materials and has opened new opportunities for contributing to the circular economy.

.

Main challenges of the project

.

During the initial phase of the project, the main needs and challenges of manufacturing plant pots using 3D printing were identified. These are:

  • Selection of sustainable materials to reduce environmental impact and promote the circular economy.
  • Ensuring water tightness of the products manufactured with this technique.
  • Ensuring adequate mechanical resistance.

To overcome these challenges, we chose FDM additive manufacturing technology and worked with sustainable materials such as PLA with wood and recycled PET. With these materials, we were able to create innovative prototypes that meet the requirements in terms of resistance and sustainability.

In the final phase, the prototypes were validated technically and economically under real operating conditions. Additionally, a training session was held to transfer the knowledge gained, and the unit manufacturing cost of each item was calculated. This provided CitySens with a solid foundation for evaluating production costs and planning future production.
