CitySens celebrates 10 years of innovation, design, plants and sustainability

This year we celebrate 10 years since the founding of CitySens.
Did you know that the spark that gave rise to CitySens was born during the PhD thesis of our co-founder Xavier Rius? That’s right — while Xavier was studying the nutrient consumption of a vertical hydroponic system installed in his chemistry lab, he realized the transformative power of plants.
.
After completing the thesis, together with Pär Blanking and Francisco Andreade, and guided by cutting-edge innovation and Design Thinking processes, they carried out important exploratory work through interviews, surveys, and group meetings.
.
Thanks to this stage, they realized that chemical sensor technology was still far from meeting the daily needs of households and workspaces. The real need was another: many of us end up losing our plants! Because we don’t have time to care for them, we lack the space to place them, or we don’t know how to look after them. With these needs in mind, the entrepreneurial team began the conceptualization and development of solutions to address these challenges.
.
.
It was in 2015 that the company was officially established thanks to the drive of the entrepreneurial team and the support of more than 265 people who supported the launch of the first product: the CitySens self-watering vertical planter.
.
Since then, CitySens has come a long way, hand in hand with the entire community that is part of this project, and most importantly, the whole CitySens team is still full of enthusiasm to keep growing together.
.
CitySens was born to offer solutions to those of us who love having plants at home and want to enjoy green spaces, regardless of the space we have, the time available or the knowledge to care for them as they deserve. This original purpose is still fully valid and, after 10 years of work, has materialized into the current CitySens product catalog.
.
.
The CitySens project goes beyond its product catalog. To bring its vision to life, it has focused from the beginning on innovation, design, local manufacturing, environmentally friendly materials, and positive social impact. These are the values that define CitySens and that, after 10 years, have resulted in the global impact of the company.
- Together we have transformed more than 25 tons of recycled plastic into products to enjoy plants in our daily lives.
- Together we have contributed to the employment of more than 20 people at risk of social exclusion.
- Together we have created more than 10,000 new green corners in cities across Europe.
.
.
This 10th anniversary marks a turning point for CitySens. For the past 2 years, CitySens has been working to incorporate new technologies and materials to continue offering new products while strengthening brand values.
.
Recently, 3D printing technology has been incorporated to speed up the design of new products. They already have two products in their catalog manufactured at their Tarragona studio using 3D printing. One of them is the CitySens tabletop planter, a self-watering pot resulting from collaboration with the design studio Innou, artisan Juan Righetti from Ucycling Bottles, and technology centers specializing in 3D printing such as Eurecat and IAM3D.
.
.
As for materials, this year will see the launch of a new line of CitySens products made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic — the same plastic we all collect in the yellow recycling bin.
.
We live on a planet with finite resources, and the pace of natural resource exploitation exceeds planetary limits. It is imperative that we consider the waste we generate as a first-rate raw material. To launch products made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, CitySens has partnered with recycled materials manufacturer PLASTICPeople, designers Oiko and Lúcid, and the Contract-Hospitality experts at Aleteo Insight. The project has also received support from the AMBIT Cluster and the Catalan Waste Agency.
